eat with your family day 2011NEW technology such as social media has made communication more convenient but Singaporeans must not neglect the need to set aside time for family bonding, said Major-General (NS) Chan Chun Sing, the Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports. He said: "New technology also changes the way we communicate. I do not see this as a threat, but as an opportunity."
This is because social media and greater access to telecommunication represent new means to network and maintain communication with people. Speaking to reporters after he launched the National Family Celebrations (NFC) 2011, MG Chan said: "All these technological advancements are but means (to communicate). "At the end of the day, they cannot deliver hugs and kisses - at least not yet." The event, held at Max Pavillion at the Singapore Expo, was attended by some 4,000 youth and their parents.
NFC 2011 is themed Connecting Youth With Their Family, and is one of the largest youth-driven family forums. It will be held until June 25, and will see a series of family activities organised, including Eat With Your Family Day, which will be held islandwide tomorrow. In his speech, MG Chan said that "every generation must evolve its own ways to maintain important family ties" as circumstances change. He said that despite modern-day stresses which threaten traditional bonds, young people have continued to believe strongly in the family as a core institution of a stable and cohesive society.
