guru poornima

guru poornimaOn this special occasion, DNA brings you some thoughts and tidbits of well-known people in the city who would like to thank their gurus. Some remember with fondness their first grade teacher, some thank their parents first and foremost while others say they were given a direction in life by a certain person whom they consider their guru. Says Parul Mehta, co-founder Motif Inc., "I was an introvert during my childhood. When I was in pre-primary one of my teachers, Rita, persuaded me to take part in a play. To my surprise I was also given a lead role. This brought about such a big change in me that today, when I look back and reflect, I cannot thank her enough. She later moved to London but left a strong memory in my mind.

Subrata Bhowmick, who was a former design director of Calico Museum and Design Centre in Ahmedabad, says foremost in his mind as a guru is his mother. "My mother is the one who taught me a lot. She is the one who brought me up and nurtured me. Then, during my NID days, illustrious educationist Helena Perheentupa of Finland was a strong influence on me. She is known to have trained the country's first generation of designers while teaching at NID. Later, when my career commenced it was Gira Sarabhai, who co-founded the museum in 1949, whom I see as a teacher and want to thank," he says.Well-known author Kumarpal Desai speaks about Pandit Sukhlal Sanghvi, who despite losing his eyesight at the age of 16, overcame this handicap and became well-versed in Jain logic rising to become a professor at Banaras Hindu University. "Sukhlalji was very learned despite being visually challenged and it is my honour to have shared some moments with this great man during my lifetime. Guru kis prakaar ka hota hai koi unse seekhe", he says.

Theatre veteran Hasmukh Baradi had three gurus who made a difference in his life. Jaswant Thakar, professor of dramatics in Vadodara, Markand Bhat from Saurashtra Sangeet Academy and Melvin D'mello, documentary producer. "From Thakar I learnt how a teacher is devoted to a student. He used to hug me after getting angry. From Bhat I understood the nuances of modern theatre and D'mello taught me about broadcasting," says Baradi.City-based classical singer Viraj Amar makes it a point to visit her gurus, Rajan and Sajan Mishra, on this occasion. However, if she cannot make it she sends a token of her gratitude to them as they taught her everything she knows about music, she says.
