With Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) slated to announce details of its iOS 5 mobile platform revamp later today during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference event, the rumor mill is in overdrive with speculation over just what the update will deliver. The smart money is on system-level Twitter integration: MacRumors reports that high-profile, well-connected tech bloggers John Gruber of Daring Fireball and Robert Scoble both confirm iOS 5 will deeply integrate the microblogging service, going beyond photo sharing and 'send-to' buttons to offer consumers a far richer and more seamless social media experience.
A TechCrunch screenshot purportedly documenting the new iOS 5 homescreen further bolsters the Twitter scuttlebutt, depicting a Twitter notification bar at the top of the iPhone screen. Last week, Twitter introduced native photo and video sharing capabilities powered by Photobucket. In the weeks ahead, Twitter will roll out photo upload features enabling consumers to attach images to tweets directly from the Twitter website--the solution will soon extend to the company's official mobile applications as well, with Twitter adding it is collaborating with mobile operators across the globe to introduce MMS-based photo sharing tools optimized for feature phones. Some pundits are citing the enhancements as further proof that deep-level Twitter functionality is coming to iOS 5.Sign up for our FREE newsletter for more news like this sent to your inbox.
Oddsmakers also forecast iOS 5 will herald the introduction of over-the-air software updates, bringing the platform in line with rival mobile operating systems. Citing multiple sources with knowledge of Apple's plans, 9to5Mac.com reported earlier this month that Apple will unveil OTA update functionality in iOS 5, meaning the new operating system itself won't arrive over-the-air but all subsequent iOS updates will. Products like the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad have long required consumers to plug the device into an iTunes-enabled computer to download and install new iOS releases. Another likely wrinkle in iOS 5: A location-enabled friends and family finder tool.
