strategy games When Zynga isn't busy creating Lady Gaga-inspired "FarmVille" variants, or encouraging Snoop Dogg to blow up trucks in the desert, the social media giant is developing new intellectual properties. There's always potentially a few minutes of near-productivity that you might have left at work, and it seems as though Zynga is consistently developing new ways to lead you into a Facebook time sink. Well, maybe now would be a good time to request some higher cubicle walls to hide from the boss. Zynga is hoping you're interested in some friendly, toy soldier combat against friends with the announcement of "Empires & Allies." Via press release, executive producer Amer Ajami referred to the new social media title as "CityVille meets Risk.
Unlike past Zynga games, "Empires & Allies" focuses more on competitive gameplay – there's also apparently a single-player campaign – and appears to have a more real-time strategy focus. With a studio team that includes veteran "Command & Conquer" and "Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-Earth" developers, "Empires & Allies" initially appears to be a departure from the company's familiar territory. Utilizing more traditional combat gameplay, the title places you in the role of an island leader looking to expand their influence through military might. While that sounds a far cry different from a game like "FarmVille," for instance, "Empires" still tasks you with familiar Zynga features such as resource collection and visiting "neighbors." It's hard to imagine that Zynga isn't looking to compete with the upcoming "CivWorld," a somewhat similar social game – albeit with a much higher franchise pedigree – that's due out sometime this summer. As our own Russ Frushtick reported a couple weeks ago, "CivWorld" isn't exactly the most casual game, so perhaps Zynga is just capitalizing upon the chance to scoop up gamers who aren't quite enamored with the more complex game's feature list.
