tracy morgan apologized on Friday for a standup performance he gave in Nashville last week, after it was widely condemned around the Web and by groups like the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation when a man who attended the show said Mr. Morgan had made anti-gay remarks. Mr. Morgan said in a statement: “I want to apologize to my fans and the gay & lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville. I’m not a hateful person and don’t condone any kind of violence against others. While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context.” After the performance by Mr. Morgan, the comedian and “30 Rock” co-star.
at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on June 3, an audience member named Kevin Rogers described the show in a Facebook post titled “Why I No Longer ‘Like’ Tracy Morgan – A Must Read.” Mr. Rogers, who said in his post that he is gay, wrote that Mr. Morgan said “gay is a choice, and the reason he knows this is exactly because ‘God don’t make no mistakes’ (referring to God not making someone gay cause that would be a mistake).” He went on to describe Mr. Morgan as saying that “gay was something kids learn from the media and programming” and if his son were gay and talked in a high-pitched voice, “he would pull out a knife and stab” him to death. Mr. Rogers said he had seen other audience members walk out of the show but that he had remained behind and watched it in its entirety.
