trailer8-wheeler fell asleep behind the wheel and plowed into the back of us," said Lou Williams, Troop 1999 Scoutmaster. "The truck flipped over and our trailer was completely wrecked. The trailer absorbed most of the blow and luckily nobody was injured, but the crash did do $10,000 [damage] to the car pulling the trailer."
The troop still has not received the insurance check for the previous trailer, so a loan was taken out to purchase the new trailer, which Williams described as a 16-foot V-nose model. When it was stolen, the troop hadn't had time to paint the outside of the trailer in order to make it easily identifiable.
The trailer's theft was surprising to Bradshaw, who felt the trailer was secured properly.
"We had a tongue lock on the trailer and had it chained around a light pole," Bradshaw said. "We also had a boot on the tire. Other than take the wheels off and set the trailer on top of the building, I am not sure what else we could have done."
The troop's annual summer camp trip begins the first week of July and Bradshaw is hopeful the troop can find gear in time for the trip.
"We are trying to find someone to borrow a trailer from," he said. "We had a meeting Monday night to regroup and see what we needed to purchase so the Scouts can do their required merit badges at summer camp. We will need to buy some ropes, lanterns and water jugs, and we are hoping we can borrow a trailer from another troop or a local business."
The troop is not confident that the trailer will be recovered.
"It was pretty clear to me that the Plano police officers didn't expect to see the trailer again," Mr. Williams said. "I think the trailer was probably already in Oklahoma by the time they took the report."
