direct poly admissionJAIPUR: The Rajasthan Technical University (RTU) is gearing up for admissions in both engineering and management colleges. This entails increasing intake capacity in popular branches, introducing new post-graduate courses and getting accreditation from central education agencies. R P Yadav, vice-chancellor, RTU, said, "The AICTE is completing seat matrix in engineering colleges affiliated with us. Once they complete the process, we will begin counselling, likely to start from July 10." He said they are planning to start the session in July end. According to an estimate, the overall capacity is 55,000 in over 150 engineering colleges, including 27 evening colleges which can only accommodate 12% of the total students.
The biggest challenge for the university and colleges is to fill up 100% seats when a sizeable number of state students migrate to Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka for higher studies or engineering. Last year, around 8,000 seats remained vacant causing loss to 25-30 engineering colleges. In fact a few in far flung areas had to declare 'zero session' for want of students. Jaipur remains the most popular destination for students. The city-based institutes are leaving no stone unturned to woo potential students who migrate to other states. Almost a dozen popular colleges are ready to increase the intake capacity in some branches as a few new engineering colleges are in the offing. "It's a litmus test for technical education in the state. To strengthen the quality of education here, we have to attract good students from other states to fill 100% seats," Shashikant Singhi, director, Poornima Group of Colleges, said. Many colleges are busy refurbishing the infrastructure to make their buildings more attractive. Some institutes have already issued notification for fresh recruitment of faculty. The biggest problem these institutes are facing is the high attrition rate among the faculty. Even the RTU is monitoring the status of teachers in each college. They have asked to post teachers' qualification on their website.
