pottery barnhe line blurs, but in general, "contemporary" is softer and more middle-of-the-road, and "modern" is artsier and more severe. Some companies, publications, and designers use the words interchangably, which is annoying. Pottery Barn is modern. Their style is simple elegant objects and furniture with bold colors. Modern just looks very new and up to date. the colors are usually bright. Contemporary is a lot more traditional. the colors are duller and seem to match more. the color palate is yellows oranges browns reds. Contemporary is like wallpaper. its out of date, but something about it is still in style. Country houses and cottages are contemporarily designed, because it would look awkward if it was modern in the inside. I loved these script shades from Pottery Barn and happened to have some similar Michael Miller fabric on hand that I ordered ages ago for a chair redo (that still needs to be “redid
